The popular aphorism that “to whom more is given, more is expected and the fact also that the reward for good and excellent work is more work,” can well be attributed to the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese Most Rev. L. I. Ugorji, as he humbly accepts the herculean task of restoring Imo State University, Owerri to it’s lost glory in his capacity as the newly inaugurated pro-chancellor and chairman of the Governing council.
This inauguration was spare headed by the Governor, His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodimma at the Government house EXCO Chambers. During the inauguration, the Governor inferred that this event is significant for both Imo State and the University as an institution.
According to the Governor, the governing council presents a golden opportunity for the state to revive an ivory tower that was the pride of Imo people 20 years ago but today mistakenly is in a pillory. Thus, the exigency with which the government wants to rehabilitate the citadel of learning and bring it back to it’s days of glory.
The Governor equally expressed confidence in the governing council as he admonished them that much is expected from them.
In his acceptance speech, Bishop Ugorji said: “it is my pleasure and unique privilege on behalf of the new governing council of the Imo State University Owerri to express my deep gratitude and appreciation to the Governor for the absolute confidence you have reposed in us by giving us this assignment and for inaugurating the council.
With great joy, I deem this appointment an honour and at the same time an arduous responsibility, given the myriads of challenges facing the University at the present moment. We are also fully aware of the high expectations of the Imo State government and the University community and we promise never to fail in our duty in bringing Imo State University back to it’s format glory.
